Legendary chef Philippe Mouchel’s lavish cookbook, More Than French, published and designed by The Slattery Media Group, has been awarded cookbook of the year by Hong Kong’s Asia Sentinel.
Reviewer Curtis Marsh rewarded More Than French with the The Wandering Palate Cookbook of the Year for embracing heritage cooking techniques and Australian produce, and for its user-friendly layout.
“You could say this cookbook has been a long time coming or decades in the making,” Marsh says.
“All the dishes and recipes exemplify the bounty of fantastic produce that Australia has to offer with the food photography arousing the senses and will motivate your hunter-gatherer instincts.
“In summary, this is a cookbook that you use constantly both in day to day cooking and as much entertaining and planning gourmet meals, no matter where you live.”
Marsh points out that Mouchel’s collaboration on his first cookbook with respected food journalist and restaurant commentator Rita Erlich adds extra merit, emphasising the difference between More Than French and "cumbersome technical manuals" written by other great chefs.
“Clearly there has been and enormous and painstaking effort in test cooking and translating Mouchel’s expertise and recipes to which Erlich has the requisite background knowledge and equal passion to do so eloquently and fluidly,” he says.
More than French is a collection of over 100 recipes on cooking and preparing French-inspired dishes using simple, classic techniques, inspired by Mouchel’s broad international experience, including in Japan.
Mouchel's Melbourne restaurant PM24 has gathered much acclaim since opening in December last year. His rotisserie chicken was crowned 2011's top dish by Larissa Dubecki in The Age newspaper's Epicure section.
